In Port Charlotte last night there was a drive by shooting. A woman was sitting in a parked car when another vehicle drove by with a handgun pointing out of the window. The woman was shot, and we don't know what her current condition is. This just reminds me of the story of Front Sight's beginning. It all began with a scary drive by shooting.

Dr. Ignatius Piazza, a chiropractor at the time, was hanging out at home one quiet evening when the shots echoed throughout the otherwise still neighborhood. The bullets from the car speeding past did their best to blow away sanity, kill dreams and frighten the citizens. But leave it to Dr. Piazza to make the best out of a horrible situation. He owned guns. He loved going to the shooting range and having some good old target practice. He was considered a "great" shooter. Yet, as the weapons were fired from the window of that car, he was slapped across the face with the realization that he didn't know how to use a gun when he and his family would need it the most - when a life depends on it. Thus, the idea of Front Sight Firearms Training Institute was in the mix.

Dr. Piazza trained. He sought out gun training schools anywhere and everywhere and put in thousands upon thousands of hours of shooting practice, pistol training, automatic weapons training and several different types of firearms training. His gun handling skills skyrocketed, yet it was not enough for him. Soon, he was able to call himself an expert shooter in several different types of guns. Yet, still, not enough. So he studied. He practiced. He drilled. Finally, after weapons training to the extent that no one really even knows, he became the second man in the world to earn a Four Weapons Combat Master Certificate. Needless to say, this guy knows a thing or two about guns and other weapons. But still - you guessed it - it was not enough. It was great for him and his family that he knew how to handle a gun with the expertise that he now held. But what about the OTHER people who needed to learn self defense? What about the OTHER people who wanted to offer family protection? What about the OTHER people who had no idea what to do in a life threatening situation? That's where Front Sight comes in.

In April of 1996, the doors were opened. Dr. Piazza wanted a place where people could come to find the best self defense firearms training available. He wanted a place where people could come to learn every aspect of weapons handling, from choosing a gun to aiming and shooting a gun to the legal aspects of using a gun and every little speck of a detail in between. He wanted a place where people could come to have FUN in a SAFE environment, but learn how to save a life. So then there was Front Sight. Now, almost thirteen years later, Dr. Piazza's dream is a reality, with a student base that has at least doubled in size every year since its opening. Front Sight was Dr. Piazza's dream and now it is helping people all across the nation achieve their dreams, too.
